This is my favorite restaurant mural in town right now…anyone know where it hangs? Guess for a chance to guest post!

Baked eggs at Julius Meinl
Might the baked eggs at Julius Meinl be the perfect brunch dish? I already loved their European pastries, amazing teas and Viennese coffee service (served on a tray with a small glass of water and a cookie), but I had no idea they whipped up lovely ceramic-skillet baked concoctions like two eggs with smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill, and potato pancake, caramelized onion, aged Parmesan and truffle oil, and the one that had me at feta; two eggs with spinach, mushrooms and, well, feta. So much tastier and more original than a basic omelette, perfectly golden brown and crispy on top, and served with toast and preserves. Like I said, the perfect brunch… Julius Meinl, 3601 N. Southport Ave., 4363 N. Lincoln Ave.
And the coffee service, although two on one small cafe table can be cluttered, I still love the presentation details, and cookie, duh.

Sprinkles Cupcakes…finally
I blogged about the storefront, but the cupcakes behind the sweet façade are here after what seems like a five-plus-year wait. A super-fun opening party allowed us to try an array of flavors..my favorites? Red velvet (of course), Key lime (only available until Sept. 6), ginger lemon and peanut butter chip…must-try-soons? Summer cherry (you only have until Aug 1!), pumpkin, carrot..hell…pretty much the whole luscious lot. Enjoy a few tasty pics and head over their to support the “trend,” that, um, yeah, I’m not sick of. Sprinkles, 50 E. Walton, 312.573.1600

Cho Sun OK
This sign above Korean barbecue favorite Cho Sun OK may just be the fanciest thing about this place, but when you’re there to fire up your table charcoal grill and cook up Korean BBQ accompanied by a killer array of small plates, salads and bites, the surroundings don’t matter much. The place is pretty bare-bones (with some nondescript tables and what look like Himalayan salt block sculptures scattered throughout), but perpetually packed with a line out the door, so on my visit the only available seat without a long wait was a quick at the bar (no grill), and our tender, tangy short ribs and charcoal-broiled tender beef were brought to us cooked. But before that all arrived, it was the Korean seafood rice flour pancake that I still think about and crave, pretty much on a daily basis. Loaded with scallion, slim slices of bright green onion, calamari and other juicy seafood baked into a not-too-greasy pancake with a tangy soy-based dipping sauce. Surprisingly enough, it was too big to finish, but the leftovers were also killer the next day.
As I mentioned, we did an abbreviated version of Cho (sans table grillage), but our meat arrived perfectly cooked, seasoned and sliced with an endless array of small plates filled with cucumber salad, fish cakes, bean sprouts, potato salad, kimchee and other bright vegetables and sides to mix and match.
If we had sat at a regular table, that spread would’ve looked something like this…
We left Cho Sun mostly full of meat, pancakes and veggies, and that telltale Korean BBQ smell, but I’d like to go back to try the more traditional Korean dishes like japchae, bi bim bap and some of the codfish and mackerel dishes, and definitely take a crack at cooking up some of our own ‘cue. Random photo Friday: Orange Garden
I loved this 70-year-old Orange Garden sign spotted on West Irving Park. The post-thunderstorm sunset sky didn’t hurt the setting either, and I actually don’t mind the randomness of the sections of neon piping that decided to illuminate. Now to actually eat there..anyone ever been?

Floriole Cafe and Bakery
Scorching hot Saturdays and Sheffield Garden Walk crowdification aside, I loved my quick lunch visit to Floriole last weekend. Even with a somewhat limited savory menu (a few sandwiches, a quiche, a salad or two), we probably spent a good 10 minutes drooling over the sweet-filled bakery case before ordering. I don’t love the idea of pre-made sandwiches sittin’ around, but the bacon, goat cheese, arugula and fig looked the freshest and most enticing. I wished the bread was a little less chewy and freshly toasted, but the date-cheese-bacon combo was the perfect array of salty, sweet and crispy.
With mass dinner plans that night, we held back on the more serious desserts (fresh fruit tarts, chocolate croissants, milk chocolate caramel hazelnut tarts, pot au creme), and walked out with lemon-lavender macaroons that melted perfectly in our mouths. But a few photos of the rest…
These almost looked too perfect to eat…
