Bon Bon Vietnamese sandwiches

Bon Bon in Bucktown

Bon Bon in Bucktown

It’s kind of a schelp to get up to Nhu Lan or Ba Le for Vietnamese bánh mì sandwiches, so I was pretty excited when Bon Bon opened up in my ‘hood late spring. With baguettes from Nhu Lan, the rest of the fixings are prepared in-house from traditional (ham, paté, pickled veggies, cilantro, jalapeño and mayo) to a tender ginger chicken simmered in caramel sauce. They also offer a Char Siu pork marinated in garlic, hoisin and honey, and veggie-friendly specials like lemon grass tofu. All three nestle up nicely to carrot and daikon relish, cucumbers, jalapeños, cilantro and mayo stuffed inside soft, chewy baguettes for around $5. I loved the red bean bubble tea (although it was a bit overloaded with ice), and would be back to give lychee, green tea and mango a try. The hours can be iffy, but call ahead and then make your way over to settle in on the retro couches to get your two-fisted feast on. But you can’t leave without checking out the Technicolor selection of Asian candy (chocolate and almond Pocky!) that seems to grow every time I go back. 2333 W. North Ave, 773.878.9898

The Baby Buddha Bowl

The Baby Buddha Bowl

A cherry might signify the ultimate culinary topping for some, but I’m pretty sure it’s actually an egg. Poached, sunny-side up or fried, an egg just takes any dish it graces with its runny presence to a whole new level. My egg-topped obsessions around town abound, but the ones that I’m hopelessly addicted to are the Kuma Burger at Kuma’s Corner, the Lyonnaise salad at Le Bouchon, the egg sandwich with grilled bacon and toast at The Bristol, and the Buddha Bowls at Crisp. I love this casual Korean-inspired spot with ridiculous chicken wings, Korean “burritos,” and my favorite, bi bim bap-inspired Buddha Bowls. Even the Baby Buddha at $6 fills you up with rice, spinach, bean sprouts, carrots, zucchini-squash, chicken (or beef or tofu), a fried egg sprinkled with sesame seeds and pungent gochujang sauce on the side. Bigger versions of the bowls come with more veggies, and an organic brown rice substitution justifies the addition of deep-fried mushrooms or mashed potatoes on the side. With wooden communal picnic tables, spools of paper towel on the tables and an ultra-cute bird logo, I pretty much love everything about this place..now if we could get them to open up in Wicker Park. Chicago Bagel Authority

img_1510
“So what the hells is that schlocky mess?” you might be thinking when you look at this photo. Well, all you need to know is that Cocoa Puffs and Golden Grahams cereals morphed together Rice Krispie treat-style to form this pretty awesome dessert I spotted on the counter of the Chicago Bagel Authority. If my confectionary calculations are correct, the hybrid of the memory-inducing sugar cereals incorporates the flavors of graham crackers, chocolate, and um, marshmallows…did someone say Rice Krispie s’mores? Anyway, I didn’t get one, but I sure was fascinated. I do love everything else in this Armitage Avenue steamed bagel sandwich lunch mainstay. With most sandwiches still under $6, it’s a steal, but sadly enough, the restaurant seems to be the only thing still bustling on the strangely ghost-town-esque Lincoln Park strip. Burger Baron

img_1473In an ongoing effort to try to pay more attention to details around me, I continue to wonder about places I pass on an almost daily basis. Like Burger Baron. It’s one of those breakfast, lunch, dinner, salad, gyro, burgers (duh), chicken, hot dogs, “beefs” places that seems too good to be true, yet I have never ventured inside. Easily mistaken for Burger Barn, the Baron is never empty, so someone’s eating there. If you actually have, give me the scoop. In the meantime, I do like how their Web site tells you to “have fun,” but the highly random music reminiscent of Enigma circa 1997? Um. Yeah, you’re going to want to turn down your speakers. Panini at Piccolo

Asparagus, fontina and prosciutto

Asparagus, fontina and prosciutto

While I am very sad to see home design store Willow close its doors to go exclusively online at the end of the month, I’m happy that Piccolo across the street seems to still be going strong since its 2007 opening. Every time I walk into the bright, clean space, its hard to believe it used to be Lava Lounge, cast in dark, hazy red and stuffed with smoke-embedded couches and walls, a huge wooden bar and bottles $2 Red Stripe on Tuesdays. The tamale guy or bread lady may have swung through with snacks, but you never would’ve pictured paninis, subs and killer gelato served up in a clean bright space. Now as Piccolo, and you still might hear reggae or see hipster artwork on the walls, but there’s a full delicious menu of great paninis, sandwiches, bruschetta, gelato and a random smattering of candy. I know asparagus season is right around the corner with the crunchy, bright green stalks stuffed into the thick proscuitto, fontina and asparagus sandwich served on grilled Fulton Street Bakery ciabatta and served with a tangy and light artichoke salad on the side. The caprese is a filling combo of tomato, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil while the roast turkey offers an interesting combo of turkey, Brie and cranberry preserves. Bruschetta bites offer tastes of brie, honey and proscuitto as well as white anchovies with basil-infused oil. And the housemade gelato (not yet in effect on a recent visit) includes flavors like chopped mint, espresso and peanut butter (is peanut butter anything ever bad?), and should be thawed out and ready to serve in the next couple of months. In the meantime, head into Willow for the store-closing sale (ends March 31) and celebrate your funky finds with big sandwiches and little bruschetta across the street. Piccolo, 859 N. Damen, 773.772.3355.

Big Sandwich Tuesday at Theory

I was tempted to be real boring and write about Shamrock Shakes today (which I’ve been strangely craving for years now) but thought I would spare myself the stomach ache and focus on a particularly good and semi-big sandwich I enjoyed at Theory last week. I am a sucker for a good chicken salad sandwich on a lunch menu, but am often disappointed with the obscene amount of mayo that douses many concoctions. The Chicken Salad Sammy at Theory made me forget about the 15 flat screen TVs surrounding our table with smoked chicken breast, walnuts, raisins, grapes, celery all mixed in a slightly spicy dijon chive mayo on lightly toasted sourdough. I knew it would be good when I could actually see all of the contents of the salad, which had luckily escaped a hearty drenching of Hellman’s. A mix of hand-cut regular and sweet potato fries rounded everything out, and if we would’ve tacked on the ice cream cookie sandwich trio, it would’ve been the perfect lunch, plasma screens aside. 9 W.
