Gong Fu Tea

Teas on display at Gong Fu

Teas on display at Gong Fu

I can’t deny it. I am a coffee-aholic through and through. In fact, I’m still amazed at the size of the headache that took the liberty of settling itself in my head and hung out for a damn day and a half last week after I missed out on coffee one morning. Yikes is right. So when I travel, I naturally like to seek out and/or stumble upon the local spots for home-brewed joe. But just as intriguing (and still caffeinated!) is when I discover an independent tea shop in a new city. I used to love the now defunct Aion tea on Division Street in Wicker Park, with its dark wood shelves, great tea selection and tiny café tables, and Gong Fu Tea in Des Moines (of all places) reminded me a bit of it. I was in Iowa for a Soy council trip for work, and was told by some of the locals in my group to check out the small tea shop in an area called East Village. A free afternoon had everyone clamoring to take a break from the tofu to check the place out.

Once inside, we marveled at the design, which was pristine, yet warm and welcoming with pistachio green walls, dark wood shelves and a hidden back area with low tables conducive to tea-sipping. But the centerpiece of the place is a stunning floor-to-ceiling wall of silver urns brimming with loose-leaf white, yellow, black, green, oolong, puerh and more from China, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Southern India, and other places the owners regularly frequent on tea-buying trips. Sold in 2, 4 and 8 Oz sizes, the selection of almost 150 teas was overwhelming, but the patient and knowledgeable staff put up with our endless questions and sample requests (which they happily provide). I wondered about the $18-an-ounce yame gyokuro Japanese green, whose buds are sheltered from the sun by straw shades, and opted instead for the Ancient Happiness sencha green, the Absolute almond black made with the almond nut oil and dried almonds, and the after-dinner friendly Chocolate Mint; China black with dark chocolate flavoring and fresh peppermint. I got more bags for friends, and have been drinking the stuff all week (plus they ship), so I may just kick (or at least cut down on) my coffee habit yet. 414 E. Chicago Antique Market

Just a few retro foodie shots captured at the Chicago Antique Market this weekend. Held once a month on Randolph and Ogden in the West Loop, the market returns August 29-30 and Sept. 26-27, and if you’ve never been, it’s more than worth the $10 entry fee. We spotted everything from great mirrors, to cookbooks, furniture, jewelry, artwork and memory-inducing retro glassware.

I am not sure who designed these retro vegetable jars, but I swear my parents had the full set of jars and glasses.

Do these vegetables looked stoned? Either way I love these jars, and I swear my parents had the full set of glasses

Is it me or do these vegetables looked stoned?

More great teapots, bowls, etc.

Orange overload

One vendor had an awesome selection of vintage cookbooks.

These thick A & W mugs brought back serious memories of pigging on hamburgers, fries and root beef floats in the comfort of my parent’s station wagon. I know there’s an A & W still lurking in Racine, and I think a trip up there for a float (or at least the root beer suckers) is on the horizon.

Random photo Friday: Gonnella

IMG_4975Along with the Blommer’s chocolate scent that randomly wafts from their Kinzie street factory, I love the smell of fresh-baked bread that emanates from Gonnella Baking Facility when I’m heading down Chicago Avenue around 5PM in the evenings. The 120-year-old bread company has a rich history, and if you check out the Web site, I like how they recognize employees that have been working there for as long as 20, 30 and even 40 years. I caught this shot just off Milwaukee Avenue at sundown. 1001 W. Chicago Avenue

Vintage food ads at West Fest

A file of old food ads at West Fest

I was wandering around West Fest on Chicago Avenue a few weeks ago and noticed a particularly cool vendor with a ton of great antique knick-knacks and vintage posters, portraits and ads labeled by genre, style, sport, era, etc. Arranged like a comprehensive record collection of mainstream brands from my youth, I loved this box of vintage food and drink ads.

Fitting the bill at Sepia

The bill at Sepia comes on one of these postcard trays

The bill at Sepia comes on one of these postcard trays

I swear, I am getting to the food we ate at Sepia last weekend, but I wanted to do a post on the great vintage French postcard trays that are brought to the table carrying your paper check. So much nicer than when the bill is just slapped inside a black vinyl book, put on a plastic American Express tray, or folded up and subtly placed in the middle of the table. I know Hamburger Mary’s delivers the bill in a stiletto, and Urban Belly plunks down chewy ginger candies with theirs. Any other interesting bill presentations you’ve noticed or particularly like?

Big League Chew

You're in the big leagues when you've got serious sugar high

You're in the big leagues when you've got serious sugar high

Recently spotting these pouches of “Ground Ball Grape” and “Outta here Original” Big League Chew gum at Mars Cheese Castle of all places sparked some serious childhood memories for me. The chew was invented in 1980 by two major league baseball players, who ingeniously knew that shredded gum in a pouch would just taste better and make dorky kids like my brothers and I feel especially cool with corn syrupy wads resting against our cheeks for hours. Years later I now just instinctively reach for my spearmint Orbit when confronted with a last-minute gum aisle decision, and I don’t even look for any Big League Chew. But I’m pretty sure the ultra-sugary gum is almost nonexistent, kind of like Fruit Stripe and Bubble-eez. Gotta love finding old-school gum that lasts about 3 minutes and starts to make you sick after 1. But it’s so worth it for the fleeting moment of overwhelmingly sugary grape flavor that makes you say, “oh man that’s good,” then shortly after, “OK, I’m done.”

Sesame balls at Whole Foods

Sesame balls from Whole Foods

Sesame balls from Whole Foods

Out of all the different kiosks bursting with deliciousness at the new Whole Foods in Lincoln Park, I can’t for the life of me stray from the sushi/noodle/Chinese bar for lunch. And more specifically, the sesame balls hiding next to the orange chicken, fried rice and lo mein. You actually get a sesame ball or egg roll with the lunch special, but I’ve gotten into the habit of buying four of the mini dense doughnut hole treats covered with nutty sesame seeds on the outside and filled with a sweet bean paste, and eating them in one sitting. When I need to take a break from Korean short ribs with brown rice or the sushi trays, I may one day make my way over to the Italian, Southern, Mexican and 1950s-style diner counters, but I’ll always end my meal with a few of these chewy, filling gems. 1550 N. The Boundary ceiling

The Boundary

The Boundary

OK, while I don’t approve of the obscene number of flat screens at The Boundary sports bar/restaurant on Division Street, I’ve always loved the bow-truss ceiling, exposed brick and hanging wood-panel structures. They also make a mean buffalo chicken salad. 1932 W. Division St., 773.278.1919
