Chicago Antique Market

Just a few retro foodie shots captured at the Chicago Antique Market this weekend. Held once a month on Randolph and Ogden in the West Loop, the market returns August 29-30 and Sept. 26-27, and if you’ve never been, it’s more than worth the $10 entry fee. We spotted everything from great mirrors, to cookbooks, furniture, jewelry, artwork and memory-inducing retro glassware.

I am not sure who designed these retro vegetable jars, but I swear my parents had the full set of jars and glasses.

Do these vegetables looked stoned? Either way I love these jars, and I swear my parents had the full set of glasses

Is it me or do these vegetables looked stoned?

Orange overload

One vendor had an awesome selection of vintage cookbooks.

These thick A & W mugs brought back serious memories of pigging on hamburgers, fries and root beef floats in the comfort of my parent’s station wagon. I know there’s an A & W still lurking in Racine, and I think a trip up there for a float (or at least the root beer suckers) is on the horizon.

Random photo Friday: Gonnella

IMG_4975Along with the Blommer’s chocolate scent that randomly wafts from their Kinzie street factory, I love the smell of fresh-baked bread that emanates from Gonnella Baking Facility when I’m heading down Chicago Avenue around 5PM in the evenings. The 120-year-old bread company has a rich history, and if you check out the Web site, I like how they recognize employees that have been working there for as long as 20, 30 and even 40 years. I caught this shot just off Milwaukee Avenue at sundown. 1001 W. Chicago Avenue

Vietnamese iced coffee at Vella Cafe

Vietnamese iced coffee on the rocks at Vella Cafe

Man oh man am I going to miss the bright and sunny Vella Cafe when it closes up at the end of August to make room for Bill Kim’s (of Urban Belly) new venture, Belly Shack (Latin American and Pan-Asian influenced salads, sandwiches, soups and more). But Vella had a good run with owners Melissa Yen (a previous and future guest blogger) and Sara Voden, offering delicious brunch items like a spicy tofu scramble, amaranth pancakes with lingonberry jam and a sausage frittata panini. Lunch offers a surprisingly good vegetarian bánh mì with fried tofu, carrots, jalapeño, cilantro, mint, house pickled daikon and spicy chili mayo and grilled cheese with tomato. But the Vietnamese iced coffee is what I may go in for daily before they close up shop. You’ll be more productive than you ever thought possible after this tall pint glass full of espresso, coffee and sweet, creamy condensed milk served over ice. Yeah, you can get iced Vietnamese coffee at more authentic spots, but I loved how Vella whips theirs up and has it available for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Any other favorite items you’ll miss? Don’t worry, there’s still time to get in your final fix. 1912 N. Western Ave., 312.489.7777

Vintage food ads at West Fest

A file of old food ads at West Fest

I was wandering around West Fest on Chicago Avenue a few weeks ago and noticed a particularly cool vendor with a ton of great antique knick-knacks and vintage posters, portraits and ads labeled by genre, style, sport, era, etc. Arranged like a comprehensive record collection of mainstream brands from my youth, I loved this box of vintage food and drink ads.

On the table: Jam

Killer new brunch/lunch spot in Ukie Village, I can't stop thinking about eggs Benedict with spinach hollandaise and crispy pork belly, and the housemade biscuits and raspberry jam. Review to come.

The view from the balcony at 33 Club

Restaurateur Jerry Kleiner (Gioco, Carnivale, Marche, Opera and others) always names his new restaurants at the 11th hour, usually after the chef, menu, tables, light fixtures and framed photos are already in place, and the hostess is ready to start taking names. I got a sneak peek at his latest venture last night, 33 Club, located on Wells Street in the heart of Old Town. I’m not sure Kleiner’s ever opened up anything this north before, but the location rocks and the huge supperclub-style space and well-priced menu by chef Daniel Kelly will do great in that neighborhood. Classic American fare takes over the menu (braised veal ragoût; $22, Matidore steak sandwich; $12 and broiled Lake Superior Whitefish filet; $18) but I’m most excited about the $3 bar snacks we tried like deviled eggs and bacon popcorn, and an intriguing sounding dish called the whitefish hoagie. There’s also an especially tasty dish I believe was once a standout at D. Kelly (Daniel Kelly’s first restaurant on Randolph Street); Maine lobster stuffed natural chicken breast. They’re shooting to officially open next week, so call before you head in, and expect a wait. 33 Club, 1419 N. Wells St., 312.644.1419
